The Former President's Woke Warning Overlooks Europe's Real Danger: Technological Decline.

Donald Trump's national security strategy offers a misguided assessment of the European Union. It claims that open-border policies and so-called "woke" policies represent an existential threat to the continent's identity. Yet, this perspective rests on a fundamental misinterpretation of the reality. The actual challenge facing the EU is not societal but technological and economic lag.

A Glaring Economic Divide Separating Europe and the US

Statistics paint a sobering picture. Between 2008 and 2023, American economic output surged by 87%, while a paltry thirteen and a half percent growth for the European Union. Over this period, European income per person dropped from 76.5% to just 50% of the American figure. Strikingly, even the poorest US state now has a greater average income than major EU nations like France and Italy.

Currently, about 50% of the global top fifty technology firms are US-based, while only four are European.

The Technological Shortfall: The Core Problem

This widening disparity is driven by superior efficiency gains in the United States, fueled by technological innovation and higher total factor productivity. The landscape of world technology dominance is overwhelmingly American. In the last fifty years, 241 US firms have grown into companies valued at more than $10bn, versus just 14 in the European continent.

This disparity prompts a pressing question: As the competition for future industries like AI, semiconductors, and quantum computing, what is Europe positioned? Most analysts agree it is largely a two-horse race between the US and China, with Europe entering at a clear disadvantage.

Underlying Factors of the Continent's Technological Lag

A number of key reasons explain this innovation chasm.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The United States has a far deeper and more dynamic network for funding startups. The EU has yet to establish a true unified investment market, which limits the growth potential of emerging companies.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Complex and divided rules hamper Europe. A US startup can introduce a product under a single set of laws to access a consumer base of over 330 million. The EU, despite a bigger population, is split among 27 separate regimes, creating significant market obstacles.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Views on risk-taking vary greatly. In some EU nations, a startup's collapse was once viewed with stigma, whereas in the US, it is often seen as a valuable lesson.
  • Military Investment: The US benefits from a deeply integrated innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. The continent's chronic underinvestment in defense has eroded its ability in breakthrough innovation.

A Path Forward: Grounds for Cautious Optimism

Despite these challenges, one can find causes for optimism. European leaders are increasingly aware of the severe threat and have started to propose serious reform. Notable analyses on EU competitiveness and the internal market highlight the need for sweeping reforms.

With the right incentives and rule changes, these assets might enable much higher levels of commercial innovation.

Europe still possesses considerable advantages: skilled workforce, top-tier education systems, and world-class labs. Alongside a vast domestic consumer base and high savings rates, these foundations could unleash a surge of investment and entrepreneurship.

Importantly, even if Europe does not take the lead in creating next-generation tech, it can still significantly boost economic output by adopting and adapting innovations from elsewhere.

An Inflection Point

The European Union now faces a critical moment. To paraphrase a famous line, decline often happens "gradually and then suddenly". So far, Europe's slide in innovation has been gradual. However, without bold steps to address its deep-seated problems, today's gradual weakening could turn into a rapid and permanent loss of global economic relevance.
