The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the US against five Europeans working on combating digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.
European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe such as the French president charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans targeted individuals who have been at the heart of efforts to introduce legislation governing American tech companies.
“For too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in condemning the decision.
The restrictions were imposed this week against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
